The Process
New Memorials

Select the shape, stone type, colour, surface finish, base or no base, vase or no vase. We will advise you on the local regulations. Provide us with the wording you would like to put onto the memorial.

We will draw up a scale proof, showing the shape and size of the stone, and include any details and designs. We will include the inscription – we can adjust the size and the lettering and line spacing to get a clearly readable memorial whilst expressing all the details you want. We may have room within the regulations to adjust the memorial size or we can provide alternatives and suggestions if space becomes limited. We will send this to you via email or in the post and can make amendments to this to ensure we get it just right for you and your family. We can also provide photo examples of similar memorials and stone types to help you visualise how it will look. We will at this stage also provide you with a quote so you know exactly how much it will be, with no hidden costs.

Once we have got the design and layout that you are happy with you can then place the order.

Whether the memorial is to go into a churchyard or cemetery we will need to get authorisation from the relevant authorities before we can start work. If the memorial is to go into a cemetery we will need to have the application signed by the Owner of the Exclusive Rights of Burial (ERB), this is the person who purchased the grave and legally is the only person who is allowed to place or amend the memorial on a grave. Sometimes it can be more than one person so we will need signature of all owners. We will send you any application forms that are needed and we will also send a copy of the proof to do a final check to ensure all the details are correct. We will indicate where, if necessary, to sign an SAE to return them to us to forward to the vicar or council. We hope to have been able to advise you of the regulations so it should just be a formality but with so many variants there sometimes can be issues. It is at this point they will become apparent before any work has started and we can easily make alterations. Once the vicar or council have received our application they will be in touch and if happy with the application will ask for payment. We will make this payment on your behalf, and it will have been included in the quote. Sometimes it isn’t clear who is the owner of the ERB and it is at this point the council will let us know if the wrong person has signed the application. We will then put you in touch with the council and they will be able to help you with the process of transferring ownership into your name. ERB ownership is generally not a problem when dealing with churchyard memorials. Once we have had the relevant approval we will send an invoice for a 50% deposit.

We are now able to order the stone. It is worth noting the lead time on delivery is about 4 months and on some stone types this can be longer. We try to carry a number of flat granite ashes tablets suitable for churchyard memorials in stock so we should be able to provide these within a few weeks.

We are required to leave the ground a minimum of 6 months to settle before we place a memorial on a full burial grave, ashes memorials can be placed sooner. As soon as the stone arrives we will schedule getting the work done and if the appropriate time has passed we will get the memorial fitted.

When we have fitted the memorial we will be in touch to let you know and will send you a photo of it in place. We will then send you the invoice for the final amount payable.

*Please note a memorial stone marking a full burial cannot be placed until at least 6 months has passed from the burial date. There are no time constraints for a memorial to mark an ashes grave. We carry a number of granite ashes tablets suitable for churchyards in stock so it should be possible to have these completed in a few weeks
The Process
Additional Inscriptions

The first thing we need is for you to let us know the wording you would like to add. Usually this will follow the same format as the original: name including middle name, dates written as numbers or in full etc. If it is to go on a memorial that we have removed to allow for another burial then we can remind you of what is already written there.

We will then measure the memorial noting letter size and line spacing etc. We will then draw up a scale proof showing the outline shape of the memorial, the existing inscription and the new wording. This will confirm that there is enough space, we will be able to offer suggestions if room is limited. The proof will show the letter shape as closely as possible but when the work is carried out we will ensure that the letters match the existing as closely as possible. Once you have seen the proof you may wish to make changes which we are happy to do. We also provide a quote for doing the work and refitting the memorial. We will advise you if the existing inscription requires any refurbishment which will be included in the quote along with cleaning the stone to make the memorial look as fresh and new as possible.

Once we have got the inscription layout that you and your family are happy with you can then place the order.
